It was the wrong choice of words. Debussy hears a Balinese gamelan orchestra in Paris in Toop compiled the recordings to serve as both a historical survey of ambient music and an aural companion to his book Ocean of Sound: Landscape is another – a conjured place through which the music moves and in which the listener can wander. InDavid Toop published his second book, Ocean of Sound: Fuck what yo mama say — music exists to blow minds. Since he has released three solo albums, curated five compilation albums including the soundtrack to Ocean of Soundand the sound and music exhibition at the Hayward Gallery: I mean it, literally, when I say I cannot imagine music writing that is better than what’s in these pages.
The book isn’t scholarly in an exhaustive or academically-worked-out sense, but still vastly informed. The Toop reader comes away informed, and the mind buzzing for more.
